When is the Best Time to Book Your Maternity Session?
The Ideal Timeline:
The sweet spot for capturing stunning maternity images is typically between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. Around this time, your baby bump is beautifully round and prominent, yet you’re still (hopefully!) comfortable enough to move, stand, sit, and pose without too much strain. Of course, every pregnancy is unique, so if you’re carrying multiples or feeling extra energetic, we can adjust accordingly. Just keep in mind that earlier sessions can result in a slightly smaller bump, whereas waiting too long might leave you feeling too tired or uncomfortable.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos
Comfort & Style: Your maternity session is all about celebrating you, so choose outfits that feel good to wear and also reflect your personal style.
Layers & Accessories:
A light cardigan or kimono can add visual interest and versatility to your shoot. Delicate jewelry—like a simple necklace, dainty bracelet, or classic earrings—can help tie your look together. If you’d like to incorporate a sentimental item (perhaps a family heirloom or baby’s first shoes), feel free to bring it along. Accessories can tell a story and add depth to your images.
What to Bring to Your Maternity Session
Your Partner & Family: If you have a partner or older children, consider including them in part of the session. Capturing your family’s connection and the excitement they share for this new addition can result in heartwarming images you’ll cherish forever. Coordinating outfits doesn’t mean everyone has to wear the same thing—just keep colors and styles complementary.
Personal Touches: Don’t hesitate to bring along personal elements that have meaning. A small stuffed animal, your baby’s ultrasound photo, or a special blanket you’ve picked out for the nursery can add a personal, narrative touch to your session. These little details help tell the story of your growing family.
A Fresh Bouquet of Flowers: If you’re envisioning a soft, romantic feel for your maternity session—or simply want to add a bit of natural beauty—consider bringing along a, fresh bouquet of flowers. A thoughtfully chosen arrangement that complements your outfit colors and the overall aesthetic of your shoot can truly elevate your images.
Essentials for Comfort: It’s always a good idea to bring along a few practical items, too. Pack water, snacks, and comfortable walking shoes if we’ll be moving between locations. A small makeup bag for touch-ups, a hairbrush, and some blotting paper can help keep you looking fresh and radiant. If you’re shooting outdoors, consider bug spray or sunscreen depending on the season and location.
Additional Tips for a Successful Maternity Session
Relax and Enjoy: It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous, especially if this is your first professional photoshoot. Just remember that I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Trust the process—together, we’ll find poses and angles that flatter you, highlight your bump, and authentically capture your personality. The more relaxed and “in the moment” you are, the more genuine and beautiful your photos will be.
Hair & Makeup: Many expecting mothers treat themselves to professional hair and makeup before their shoot. It can give you a confidence boost and ensure a polished look in your photos. If professional styling isn’t in the cards, don’t worry! A simple, natural look, enhanced with a bit of mascara, and softly styled hair, can be just as lovely.
Communicate Your Preferences: Before the shoot, feel free to share any ideas, special requests, or concerns you have with me. Whether you’ve seen a pose online you’d love to try or you’re worried about a particular angle, communicating openly ensures we’re on the same page. Remember, this session is about celebrating you and your growing family—your comfort and happiness are my top priorities.
